Every square inch is supported by premium mold, moisture and insect resistant high density foam for added comfort and safety. You will also enjoy stepping onto our custom premier quality Zebra MMA mats, highly regarded for their impact resistance and shock absorption, topped off with a smooth textureless vinyl for seamless training. Our mats are disinfected and vacuumed every single day to offer our students the best possible training experience.

John Morgan is the founder and Head Black Belt instructor of Hypermodern Jiu-Jitsu. Morgan was first exposed to grappling as a Varsity-Freshman wrestler at Huntington Beach High School, where he first found his passion for grappling. After high school, Morgan immediately became immersed in the grappling world and transitioned from wrestling to Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Morgan's 20+ years of grappling, MMA and Coaching experience has evolved into a highly effective and strategic coaching style for jiu-jitsu, wrestling and MMA. Morgan has been developing a strategic mindset through chess ever since childhood, when he began traveling the United States to compete in chess tournaments. He still plays speed chess daily, to stay sharp and to prepare himself mentally before every competition. Morgan has a strong passion for coaching, and an even bigger passion for elevating himself and those around him. With a strong wrestling background, complimented with an adept guard-game, Morgan implements an innovative blend of wrestling and jiu-jitsu, commonly referring to the style as "Wrestle-Jitsu.

Before dedicating his life to coaching, Morgan moved out to Hawaii to surf and explore his MMA career. After developing an unblemished 3-0 MMA record, he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, landing a spot on the UFC staple show "The Ultimate Fighter." Since then, Morgan has competed in and medaled at countless BJJ tournaments including IBJJF Pan Ams (3rd place, Purple Belt) and No Gi Worlds (1st Place, Purple belt). More recently, Morgan made Team USA Grappling and traveled over 7,000 miles to Baku, Azerbajian to represent in the 2017 Grappling World Championships. Morgan returned to Astana, Kazakhstan as a Team USA Veteran the following year to become the 2018 UWW Grappling World Champion, in Nogi at 71kg.
Although Morgan has dedicated his whole life to grappling, he is also extremely passionate about helping the community. As a proud Huntington Beach local and head wrestling coach for Huntington Beach High School, where his journey began, Morgan dedicates a majority of his time to developing positive change in youth, regardless of age, income or background, to provide them with an equal opportunity to learn, grow and succeed. Maja Morgan is an assistant coach and purple belt with over 6 years of grappling experience. She started competing in 2014, and still actively competes to this day. Most recently, in 2018, Maja earned a spot on Team USA Grappling, and traveled to Kazakhstan to compete at 53kg in the 2018 UWW Grappling World Championships. She also received a gold medal at 53kg and bronze medal at 56kg at the 2019 Pan American Championships in Argentina. Maja has been training, competing around the world, and coaching all while balancing her professional engineering career. As a kids coach, she motivates her students to become better focused, disciplined and set goals while maintaining a fun, safe and challenging learning environment.
Competition Team

In 2017, the newly established Hypermodern Competition Team emerged with some impressive results during the 2017 Jiu Jitsu World League Season (JJWL). Hypermodern finished this season ranking 3rd in season points, 2nd in submissions and 2nd in victories overall out of over 100+ academies who competed from all over Northern and Southern California. Morgan's emphasis on blending wrestling and jiu-jitsu has developed into a modern and cutting edge style of its own, proven effective through a highly successful competitive jiu-jitsu program.
