Jiu-Jitsu is commonly referred to the art of “human chess,” due to the intellectual and strategic aspects of the sport. Chess has played an important role throughout history in developing a strategic mindset, particularly after WWI, when the “Hypermodern” school of chess emerged to challenge traditional chess strategies. This parallels the same principles that Hypermodern Jiu Jitsu was founded upon. Hypermodern was established in 2017, and emerged as a highly competitive academy, by strategic execution of a hybrid style of wrestling and jiu-jitsu. This unique style took our competition team to the top of the podium numerous times, and ended our first competition season ranking 3rd as a competition team during the 2017 Jiu Jitsu World League Season, out of 100+ local academies. Hypermodern continues to evolve strategically and challenge traditional technique with modern jiu-jitsu, wrestling and grappling, as we strive to “Stay A Move Ahead.”
MEET THE INSTRUCTORS
John Morgan, Black Belt
John Morgan is the founder and Head Black Belt instructor of Hypermodern Jiu-Jitsu. Morgan was first exposed to grappling as a wrestler at Huntington Beach High School. Since childhood, Morgan has immersed himself in the grappling world, transitioning from wrestling to Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Morgan's 22+ years of wrestling, grappling, and MMA experience has evolved into a highly strategic coaching style. Morgan credits his strategic mindset to years of practicing chess. Morgan has played chess competitively since childhood, when he traveled the United States to compete in chess tournaments. He still plays speed chess daily, to stay sharp and to prepare himself mentally before competition. With a strong wrestling background, complimented with an adept guard-game, Morgan implements an innovative blend of wrestling and jiu-jitsu, commonly referring to the style as "Wrestle-Jitsu."
Before dedicating his life to coaching, Morgan moved out to Hawaii to surf and explore his MMA career. After developing an unblemished 3-0 MMA record, he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, landing a spot on the UFC staple show "The Ultimate Fighter." Since then, Morgan has competed in and medaled at countless BJJ tournaments including IBJJF Pan Ams (3rd place, Purple Belt) and No Gi Worlds (1st Place, Purple belt). More recently, Morgan made Team USA Grappling and traveled over 7,000 miles to Baku, Azerbajian to represent in the 2017 Grappling World Championships. Morgan returned to Astana, Kazakhstan as a Team USA Veteran the following year to become the 2018 UWW Grappling World Champion, in Nogi at 71kg.
Although Morgan has dedicated his whole life to grappling, he is also extremely passionate about helping the community. As a proud Huntington Beach local and Head Wrestling Coach for Huntington Beach High School, where his journey began, Morgan dedicates a majority of his time to developing positive change in youth, regardless of age, income or background, to provide them with an equal opportunity to learn, grow and succeed.
