John Morgan, Black Belt
John Morgan is the founder and Head Black Belt instructor of Hypermodern Jiu-Jitsu. Morgan was first exposed to grappling as a Varsity-Freshman wrestler at Huntington Beach High School, where he first found his passion for grappling. After high school, Morgan immediately became immersed in the grappling world and transitioned from wrestling to Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ), and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). Morgan's 20+ years of grappling experience and plethora of diverse grappling knowledge is something he continuously works to evolve and implement into a modern, strategic and highly effective coaching style for jiu-jitsu, wrestling and MMA. One contributor to his coaching success is how Morgan has developed an extremely strategic mind through chess. Morgan began traveling the U.S. in his youth to compete in chess tournaments and still uses speed chess in his daily life to stay sharp and to prepare mentally and strategically for competition.
Before dedicating his life to coaching, Morgan moved out to Hawaii to surf and explore his MMA career. After developing an unblemished 3-0 MMA record, he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, landing a spot on the UFC staple show "The Ultimate Fighter." Since then, Morgan has competed in and medaled at various competitive BJJ tournaments including IBJJF Pan Ams (3rd place, Purple Belt) and No Gi Worlds (1st Place, Purple belt). Most recently Morgan joined Team USA and traveled over 7,000 miles to Baku, Azerbajian to represent the U.S. in the 2017 Grappling World Championships.
Morgan has a strong passion for coaching, and an even bigger passion for elevating himself and those around him. With a strong wrestling background, complimented with an adept guard-game, Morgan implements an innovative blend of wrestling and jiu-jitsu, commonly referring to the style as "Wrestle-Jitsu." In 2017, the newly established Hypermodern Competition Team emerged with some impressive results during the 2017 Jiu Jitsu World League Season (JJWL). Hypermodern finished this season ranking 3rd in season points, 2nd in submissions and 2nd in victories overall out of over 100+ academies who competed from all over Northern and Southern California. Morgan's emphasis on blending wrestling and jiu-jitsu has developed into a modern and cutting edge style of its own, proven effective through a highly successful competitive jiu-jitsu program.
Although Morgan has dedicated his whole life to grappling, he is also extremely passionate about helping the community. As a proud Huntington Beach local and head wrestling coach for Huntington Beach High School, where his journey began, Morgan dedicates a majority of his time to developing positive change in youth, regardless of age, income or background, to provide them with an equal opportunity to learn, grow and succeed.
